  • Cycle 17 Recap

    August 31, 2025

As summer draws to a close, so must our summer cycle. Cycle 17 brought us fun times, fighting babies, time travel, homoerotically charged friendship, and enough breadsticks and radioactive goo to go around.

Week one started out with some strong returners: episode 2 of Jack Ventimilia’s reality TV spoof chiara and lauren take a trip to friendship island (and it’s gonna be sooo great); episode 3 of Sarah Jae Leiber’s music-fueled Beatles fever dream Baby, It’s You; and episode 6 (!) of AJ Ditty’s post-apocalyptic retelling of the Odyssey, The Adventures of Bungo Calamity, Apocalypse Clown. They were joined by two pilot episodes by two Serials newcomers: The Strongest Babies in New America by Leah Plante-Weiner, and Age of Sagittarius by Georgia Wright.

But, much like the runtiest baby in the fighting ring, two of these brilliant episodes left the week defeated, and we waved goodbye to both The Strongest Babies in New America and Baby, It’s You! (though rumor has it a newly finished full-length script is now available on Sarah Jae Leiber’s NPX…)

Week two introduced us to two time-traveling pilots. We traveled to the 19th C merchant marine with nukes in tow for The Merry Wavecrash by writing duo Phil Jameson and Jeremy Kaplowitz. And Time Warpz by Serena Norr saw us visiting a disturbingly crooked 1950s diner to dance the jitterbug with its arch denizens! Unfortunately, neither of these pilots will be continuing into the future with us, as they were beat out by an Upper East Side mother (who is actually Nick Turturro in drag), a cringy marriage proposal in Olive Garden, and overcoming familial abuse by screaming The Killers at the top of your lungs with the entire audience in support– I mean, The Age of Sagittarius, chiara and lauren take a trip to friendship island, and Bungo Calamity, Apocalypse Clown.

We can’t wait to see where these returning storylines will go next, and we can’t wait to see you all back at the Tank in the fall!

  • Recap of Cycle 16: May 1-3, 15-17 2025

    May 19, 2025

Here’s a quick little recap of our Spring Fling SERIALS Cycle 16. It was a doozy: full of upsets, continuing favorites, and exciting new storylines!

Last cycle’s double pilot upset was repeated in the first week as Baby, It’s You by Sarah Jae Leiber and Cody Hom’s Double Double displaced The Good, The Bad and the Undead and Flared Base, both on their episode 2. We were sad to see Kenjiro Lee’s zombie-infused Western reinterred and Ben Schrager’s medical drama by way of putting things up your rectum discharged but happy as always to have pilots come back! This Cycle also saw the light of Paige Esterly’s Everything I Know I Learned from The Simpsons pilot episode burn intensely but briefly across the SERIALS firmament only to disappear beyond the horizon… or Burbank, CA. Gone but not forgotten!

Baby, It’s You proved to have staying power and will continue into next Cycle following the mad adventures of a group of Beatles super-fans as they try to track down those Lovable Lads from Liverpool. Evelyn, a 1960s coed has particular designs on Paul: she needs him to get her pregnant. To be fair, he did tell her he was the only one who could do it–in song–when he visited her in a dream in her dorm room!

Double Double, the tale of three witchy sisters banding together to take over the family potion business, itself went down after just two episodes. Man, that second episode is so hard to land! In its place and continuing into next Cycle is current holder of the very-long-titled-Serial award: chiara and lauren take a trip to friendship island (and it’s gonna be sooo great) by SERIALS newcomer Jack Ventimilia. Our heroines are on a journey to test their bond– on national television, of course!

The Adventures of Bungo Calamity: Apocalypse Clown by A.J. Ditty continued its gut-busting run with episode 4 & 5 which saw our wily swashbuckling clowns face off against cannibals, sirens, ex-girlfriends, mutant meth-addicted flying pig-men and Klops Corps Founder/CEO Sydon Klops. They even visited Florida…erm, I mean, Mime Country. We’ll follow them into our July-August Cycle as they track down a lost soul in Hell… Michigan… Hell, MI. Will Bungo ever make it home?

  • Recap of Jan-Feb Cycle 15

    March 1, 2025

In case you missed the new year cycle of SERIALS, here’s a quick little recap for you.

Fan favorite, Watagatapitusberry [episode 6] by Karen Marulanda, featuring the Afternoon DeLITS, who gave us reggaetone, kick ass choreography by the talented Henry Lombino and high telenovela stakes, ended its reign. We laughed, we cried, we shook ass, and we made an entire theater shout “OOO HE’S SO NASTY” at the top of their lungs.

Sybil Creepe’s House of Mysteries [episode 3] by Laurel Anderson, featuring the Breakfast Babes, who gave us spooky queer Wicked x Haunted Mansion lovechild romance that filled the room with laughs and gasps galore was also not voted back for the Summer SERIALS cycle.

But after a double pilot upset, two new challengers entered the competition; The Good, The Bad and the Undead by Kenjiro Lee, featuring Midnight Snaxxx and Flared Base by Ben Schrager featuring Dinner Party. These two silly SERIALS will be returning next cycle for episode 2!

And last but not least, The Adventures of Bungo Calamity: Apocalypse Clown [episode 3] by A.J. Ditty, featuring Lunch Bunch. Nefarious old clowning partners, kidnapping, and some kick ass dance moves scored this Serial a place in our upcoming Summer SERIALS cycle as well.

  • New Year, New Cycle

    January 13, 2025

Our next Cycle (number 15 since the return) will take place at The Tank at the end of this month and over Valentine’s Weekend in February.

Last cycle ended in a major upset with two new shows taking the top spots: The Adventures of Bungo Calamity: Apocalypse Clown penned by SERIALS old-timer AJ Ditty (B.B.’s Inferno) and Sybil Creepe’s House of Mysteries by our belovèd erstwhile performer Laurel Andersen. These return in week 1 alongside the unstoppable Reggaeton juggernaut Watagatapitusberry by Karen Marulanda. We’ll have two more highly competitive pilots entering the fray, one by longtime favorite SERIALS writer Paige Esterly (Connie Lingus) and another by young upstart Grace Tomblin Marca. All in Week 1!

That’s Jessie Cannizaro in the first ep of B.B.’s Inferno all the way back in 2016 at the old Flea Space downstairs. Photo by Scott Feterman.

And in Week 2 we’ll see two new pilots including the eagerly-awaited return of champion Kenjiro Lee (Egg Quest) to the Serials stage (puppets? probably!) along with a blast from the way past– Ben Schrager on the keyboard putting up some Old School Serialized Magic for your viewing pleasure.

That’s Crystal Arnette and Ben Schrager being eponymous back in 2015 in The Psychopath Retreat by Sofya Weitz at Anciens Regime #SERIALS.

This cycle also sees the return of past favorite directors BUBECK and Alex Church-Gonzales as well as the versatilely-talented SMJ. Serials regulars like Will Vonada, Marx, and Nate Netzley will mix it up with old guard Serials directors like Tom Costello and Kristan Seemel– do these old dudes still have what it takes to put a show up in 6 hours? We’ll find out! And some brand new blood is always a welcome addition to the nearly instant theater fuss: A.G. Levy will show us her take on Serialized Theater, and we can’t wait to see what new tricks new kid Sarah Shapiro has in store for us.

The stage will be full of Serials Favorites including April Tuiolosega, Zavier Aujay-Barnhart, Sarah Alice Shull, Jem Palmieri, Marx, Nathaniel Stornelli, Maddie Bundy, Jessie Cannizzaro, Emmie D’Amico, Natalia Mar Urzua, Hunter Levi Rothstein, Andie Fuentes, Stephanie Orta-Vazquez, Maddie Ryan, Christine Pollnow, Emily Oliveira, Jen Jarnagin, Eric Berger, Georgia Kate Cohen, Nicholas Louis Turturro, Macy Lanceta, Sanjna Narayan, Nikki Cannon, and Max Bowen. AND the acting return after a brief hiatus of our tireless hosts Elizabeth Spindler and Michael Ortiz (glad to have you back on stage, buddies)!

New faces in the performance ensemble will include Henri Brusasco, Ashley Renée Hurd, Jennifer Soraya Rose, Marina Fess, Josh Bloom, and Kristin KP Sgarro. Can’t wait to see what they’ll be putting down!

Will Vonada, Jen Jarnagin & Sabrina D’Andrea cower behind Hunter Rothstein’s Supreme Leader in Egg Quest: The Saga of the Breakfast Burritto by Kenjiro Lee.
